Hair can suffer damage from many sources, including the elements, styling products, processes or tools, chlorine and even shampoo if the shampoo is overused. Hot oil treatments help restore your hair's natural beauty. The warm oil softens and moisturizes your hair and scalp, transforming dry, dull hair into shiny, healthy-looking hair with minimal effort. You can perform simple and effective hot oil treatments at home with all-natural ingredients.

Step 1

Place a slightly damp towel in your clothes dryer to warm it up as you're preparing the oil treatment.

Step 2

Mix the three oils together--coconut, castor and olive oil--in a small saucepan. Heat the mixture on low until it is warm to the touch. Watch carefully so the oil doesn't get too hot.

Step 3

Pour a small amount of the warm oil into your palm, rub your hands together and then use your hands to massage and work the warm oil mixture into your scalp and throughout the hair. Pour a little more oil on your palm and work it into your hair. Continue this process until all of your hair is fully coated.

Step 4

Wrap your hair in a warm towel and leave it on for at least an hour, or as long as overnight.

Step 5

Remove the towel and shampoo your hair. Repeat the hot oil treatment once a month or as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Add a pinch of dried rosemary to the oil as you heat it, if you like. Then strain the warm oil before proceeding as in Step 3. A tonic and conditioner, rosemary gives hair added body and luster as it brings out dark highlights. If you don't want to dirty a towel, cover your hair with a plastic shower cap. It's disposable so there's no mess to clean up afterward.
  • Don't heat the oil too hot, as this could result in serious burns.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. castor oil
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
