Stress and anxiety are very common among women and men. They can take place when hormones are unbalanced, when your job is very demanding, when your home life is unsettled or they can result from a combination of these factors. This can take its toll on you and all of those around you. When stress and anxiety have reached peak levels, there are several ways they can be managed.

Relationships

The company that you hang around with can have a major impact on your stress and anxiety levels. Stop hanging around people who are negative and can bring you down. Start hanging around people who are happy and positive, who can help you deal with your stress levels better.

Avoidance

There are several things that you should avoid when you are dealing with stress and anxiety, such as stimulants like caffeine and nicotine. They might be able to give you a quick burst of energy, but they can also cause nervousness and restlessness, which can exacerbate your stress levels. Avoid smoking and beverages with caffeine, such as coffee, soft drinks, tea and energy drinks.

Alcohol can also be a factor in your stress levels. Drinking high amounts can cause you to be impaired and make you do things that can increase your anxiety and stress. Keep it to moderate levels if you do drink.

Relaxation Activities

Relaxation techniques can take your mind off of stressful situations and they can relax your whole body. Partake in yoga, tai-chi, meditative breathing or muscle relaxation. You can also take a nice warm bath and get a massage right afterward by your significant other.

Exercise

Exercise is known for its physical effects, such as better joint mobility, weight loss and increased muscle mass. But it can also cause an endorphin release, which can relax you and put you in a better mood. Perform 30 minutes of exercise on five or more days a week. Go for a walk, ride a bike or play Frisbee in the park with some friends.

Sleep

When you are sleeping, your body is rebuilding and recovering. This goes for all the cells in your body, including your brain. If you are sleep deprived, your body and mind cannot fully recover and you will have a hard time managing your stress and anxiety. According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep every night.

Positive Thinking

Whenever you have a bad thought in your head, stop and turn it into something positive. Find something humorous in all of the negative situations that are causing your stress and anxiety. Also, practice positive self-talk by talking to yourself as if you were talking to another person. Do not beat yourself up or get down for something you said or did. Accept it, forget it and move along.
