Human hair can be damaged in a variety of ways, such as over-exposure to heat, sun, harsh chemical treatments and pollution in the air of the city you live in. In these situations, the cuticle of the hair follicle is severed, scratched or chipped, creating split ends, frizz and lack of a healthy shine. There are ways to combat the damage once it has been done.

Step 1

Use a hot oil treatment, following the instructions on the tube. Usually, you heat them in hot water, then leave them on for a while before shampooing. Hot oil treatments temporarily reseal the hair follicle, giving it a smooth, shiny appearance.

Step 2

Apply a leave-in conditioner after you shampoo your hair. These are often fortified with proteins and amino acids that temporarily smooth hair and can also fortify the shaft of hair, leaving it stronger than before. This will help prevent further breakage and damage to the hair.

Step 3

Mix equal parts of mayonnaise, egg and olive oil in a bowl. Apply to dry hair. Leave on for 20 minutes, then thoroughly shampoo and condition your hair. Using these ingredients treats your hair to the protein and vitamins its needs to repair the hair without adding any unknown, and possibly harmful, chemicals to your hair. The only negative is that it can be difficult to wash out, and may weigh down fine, thin hair.

Step 4

Have a professional conditioning treatment at a salon. Hair stylists have access to high-quality, name-brand conditioners that have often been clinically proven to help recondition excessively damaged hair.

Step 5

Ask your stylist cut the damaged hair. If all else fails, try a new, shorter hairstyle. Cutting the damaged split ends prevents them from splitting further up the shaft. Often, taking off an extra 2 to 3 inches of hair gives the appearance of healthier, fuller locks.

Tips and Warnings

  • Seeing a professional hair stylist is often the best route to take if you feel that your hair is extremely damaged. Stop applying heat or other styling elements immediately.
