Bicycle helmets are important safety gear used to prevent injury to your head if you fall while riding. Wearing the bicycle helmet properly is important to maintain your safety. You can sustain serious injuries to your head if the bicycle helmet is not properly situated on your head or is loose. Learn the proper method for wearing a bicycle helmet to stay safe when you go out riding.

Step 1

Place the helmet flat on your head, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission instructs. Adjust the helmet so it does not lean back or to either side of your head; the helmet should cover the top of your forehead.

Step 2

Pull the straps down on both sides of your head so your ears fit in the middle of the triangular section of the straps, the Mayo Clinic adds.

Step 3

Lock the straps together under your chin. Adjust the straps as needed to ensure the strap-locking mechanism does not rest on the jaw or other part of the head.

Step 4

Wiggle the helmet back and forth on top of your head to ensure a snug fit. Tighten the chin straps if the helmet moves around too much on top of your head. Riding a bike involves constant movement, and the helmet could move out of position if not properly tightened.

Tips and Warnings

  • Purchase a smaller helmet if you tighten the chin straps as far as they will go and the helmet still moves.
