Both embarrassing and irritating, dry skin can affect any part of your body at any time. Often a result of cold, dry weather or harsh soaps, dry skin on your legs can make it difficult to wear skirts or shorts without everyone around you noticing the problem. If dry skin has become an issue and your legs are suffering because of it, it’s time to take action to remedy the problem.

Step 1

Take an oatmeal bath a couple of times a week to help soften the skin. Add 2 cups of colloidal oatmeal to a bathtub full of warm water before stepping in to soak for 20 to 30 minutes.

Step 2

Bathe only as often as you need to, as water strips away the skin's natural oils. Use warm water, as hot water can speed up the drying process. Clean yourself with a moisturizing soap that contains no alcohol or fragrances. Keep your bath short and rinse thoroughly. Pat your legs dry gently with an absorbent, soft towel so as not to irritate the skin.

Step 3

Apply moisturizing lotion to your legs after you bathe and several times throughout the day to help restore moisture to the skin. Use a thick, oil-based lotion.

Step 4

Humidify the air in your home with a humidifier. Put the humidifier in your bedroom at night while you sleep to keep the air from becoming too dry and drying your skin out further.

Step 5

Avoid wearing wool or other scratchy materials on your legs, which may irritate the skin. Opt for smoother, softer materials, such as cotton, which allow your skin to breathe.
