Since it simply isn't feasible to wear a hat everywhere to hide a bad hair day it may be time to get to the root of the problem and fix it. Dry brittle hair can stem from external factors such as dry weather or styling products to internal issues with the body such as anorexia and hypothyroidism. With so many different factors that can dry out your hair it can seem like an uphill battle, but with a few changes in your routine and a little care, dry brittle hair can be fixed.

Step 1

Wash your hair only as often as necessary. Water can strip the natural oils out of your hair leaving it dry and brittle. Avoid shampoos that contain harsh chemicals. Instead opt for a shampoo that is for dry and damaged hair.

Step 2

Condition your hair after each time you wash it with a conditioner. Read and follow the manufacturers' instructions for use.

Step 3

Absorb excess moisture from your hair when you get out of the bath or shower with an absorbent dry towel. Avoid vigorously rubbing the towel over your head as this can break off already brittle hairs. Allow your hair to air dry uncovered.

Step 4

Eat a healthy well balanced diet to help your hair to get and stay healthy. Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats and cut back on processed foods that lack vitamins and nutrients. Drink plenty of water to help your entire body stay hydrated, which will in turn help to keep your hair from drying out.

Step 5

Protect your hair from harsh weather conditions such as cold dry winter winds and hot summer sunshine. Wear hats and scarves over your head if you plan to spend time outside. Look for styling products that contain sunscreen if you have to be outdoors in the summer sun.

Tips and Warnings

  • Mayonnaise, mashed bananas, or mashed avocados are excellent natural conditioners. Apply one of these to your hair liberally and leave it in your hair for at least 15 minutes before washing it out.
  • Talk to your doctor if home methods don't help restore any moisture to your hair. Call your doctor if you experience hair loss and any other symptoms that you may feel are associated.
