Restless legs syndrome is a condition that causes you to want to move your legs after lying or sitting down for a long time. This is brought on by an uneasy feeling that can also come with a tingling or burning sensation. Although the name implies that this condition takes place in the legs, it can also be seen in the arms, as well. There are a variety of medications used to treat RLS.
Pain Relievers
Over-the-counter pain relieving medications are used when restless leg symptoms are minor and there is a slight tingling or burning sensation. Examples of these include Motrin and Advil.
Parkinson's Medications
Parkinson's disease is a condition where dopamine levels are elevated, resulting in twitching movements. Doctors prescribe this type of medication to keep the motion of the legs under control. Examples of these include Sinemet, Requip and Mirapex. Although using these medications can help RLS, they cannot reduce the chances of eventually developing Parkinson's disease.
Sleep Medications
Benzodiazepines are drugs that can help promote sleep and also relax the muscles. But they cannot stop the sensations felt in the legs while you are sleeping. Another drawback of these medications is they can cause you to be drowsy during the day. Examples of benzodiazepines that your doctor may prescribe include Lunesta, Sonata, Restoril, Rozerem and Klonopin.
Narcotics
Opioids are narcotic drugs that your doctor may prescribe. These drugs can improve symptoms that are mild to severe but if they are used in high doses, they can become addicting. Percocet and Roxicet are medications that have a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone. Vicodin and Lortrab are combination medications that have acetaminophen and hydrocodone in them. Codeine is another type of narcotic drug.
Epilepsy
Your doctor may also prescribe an epilepsy medication. An example of one of these is Neurontin.
