How to Prevent Gallstones

The gallbladder lies under the liver and stores the bile that aids in digestion. At times, small particles and cholesterol collect in the bile, creating gallstones. Gallstones occur in the gallbladder itself or in bile ducts. When the gallstones block the flow of bile, pain, nausea and vomiting may occur. With proper care, it is possible to decrease the likelihood of gallstones in the body.

Step 1

Reduce the fat intake in the diet. Consume meat and dairy products conservatively.

Step 2

Eat a healthy diet, including whole grains along with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Step 3

Avoid missing meals. Eat six small meals each day and do not fast.

Step 4

Keep weight and body mass index at a healthy level. Obesity increases the formation of gallstones.

Step 5

Exercise routinely. Walk for 30 minutes daily, at a minimum.

Step 6

Lose excess weight gradually. Dropping weight too fast increases the chance of gallstones forming.
