Skateboard grip tape is the rough surface material found on the top of skateboards and is used to provide traction for the skater. The grip tape is attached to the skateboard using a strong adhesive which you need to contend with when your tape needs replacement. The adhesive leaves behind a residue on the top of the board which you also must remove. Though it is a time consuming task, you can remove the grip tape from your skateboard using simple tools found around your home.

Step 1

Remove the wheel assembly from the skateboard by gripping one of the nuts around the bolt on the underside of the skateboard with the adjustable wrench, and using the screwdriver on the upper side of the skateboard to unscrew the bolt. Repeat the process for the second bolt on the wheel assembly, and then remove the other assembly.

Step 2

Choose one end to work on before starting. Starting at one end makes it easier to systematically remove the grip tape from your skateboard. Removing grip tape is not easier starting from the nose or the tail.

Step 3

Turn the hairdryer to its hottest setting and point it at the skateboard to heat the grip tape, according to Skateboard-City.com. Heating the board loosens the strong adhesive that is on the bottom of the grip tape. Spend several minutes heating in one area to ensure the adhesive loosens.

Step 4

Scrape the screwdriver against the grip tape to remove parts of the tape until you lift up a portion large enough to grab with your hand. Continue heating the board with the hairdryer as the screwdriver removes grip tape to melt the adhesive.

Step 5

Grip the large section of grip tape with your hand and pull up with a steady, even motion. Point the hairdryer at the grip tape as you pull up to continue loosening the adhesive. Removing grip tape is easier if you are able to remove larger pieces with this steady motion.

Step 6

Repeat Steps 3 through 5 to remove the remaining grip tape from your skateboard.

Step 7

Spread Goo Gone on the board and let it soak for approximately 30 seconds to help remove the adhesive residue, according to ArtofSkateboarding.com. Rub an abrasive sponge on the Goo Gone to remove it and the residue from the skateboard.

Things You'll Need
