As a child grows and matures, she experiences physical changes such as losing her teeth and hair growth. Some children, especially girls, get impatient because they want longer, flowing hair, but they get frustrated because it doesn't grow fast enough. Every child's hair grows at a different rate, however, you can try different techniques and products to encourage your child's hair to grow thicker and longer.
Step 1
Keep your child's hair clean. According to Kids Health, you should wash your child's hair with a mild shampoo at least once or twice a week. Keeping her hair and scalp clean will prevent oily buildup and help her hair grow at a healthy rate.
Step 2
Apply a conditioner to your child's hair after washing. Children have delicate hair that is more susceptible to breakage, so it's important to keep the hair moisturized. If your child is involved in swimming lessons, apply a leave-in conditioner to the hair to prevent damage from chlorine.
Step 3
Treat your child's hair gently. In order to avoid hair breakage, it's important not to yank combs through her hair or use metal barrettes or clips. Use fabric covered hair scrunchies to keep ponytails and pigtails in place.
Step 4
Avoid chemical treatments such as straighteners or perms. According to Teri LaFlesh in her book "Curly Like Me: How to Grow Your Hair Healthy, Long, and Strong," you should avoid any product that is powerful enough to change the texture or shape of your child's hair. Chemical treatments are corrosive and will break the delicate bonds of your child's hair.
Step 5
Stay away from heated appliances such as blow dryers or curling irons. Heat damages the hair shaft and can cause breakage and split ends. Hair that is split or damaged will continue to split or break up the hair shaft. You will need to trim damaged or split hair in order for healthy hair to grow.
Step 6
Massage your child's scalp using delicate, circular motions. Scalp massage promotes blood flow to the hair follicles, increasing hair growth and strengthening the hair follicle.
