Cross training in various defensive martial arts styles enables you to defend yourself from violent attacks, according to the Martial Arts Self Defense website. Having knowledge of mixed martial arts gives you an arsenal of defense moves to use if you are being attacked. Martial arts not only teach self-defense during the midst of an attack, it also boosts your awareness and self-confidence.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a style of fighting that uses punches, knees, elbows and kicks to overpower an attacker. Muay Thai fighters rely on giving a strong punch or round kick to their attacker's head to knock them out. Elbows and knees are also thrown when fighting an attacker in close range.

Krav Maga

Krav Maga can generally be mastered in a short time period. Krav Maga teaches effective techniques to defend against grabs, punches, knees, kicks, elbows and various weapons. The idea is to counter attack as fast as you can, striking vulnerable parts of the body such as the eyes, groin and throat. Krav Maga also teaches you to be aware of your surroundings to prevent possible attacks.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fighting style that encourages taking a person down to the ground by using ground fighting techniques and submission holds. This is mainly done by applying joint-locks and choke holds to defeat the attacker. A smaller person can use Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to defend against a bigger attacker by using leverage and technique.

Kung Fu

Kung Fu trains aims to give you a positive outlook on life, self-confidence and fighting skills that can be used in a self-defense situation. Kung Fu teaches fighting based of off using various animal styles, and builds your energy and strength. Kung Fu self defense tactics turn the energy of an attacker against himself. Various Kung Fu styles teach grappling, throws, kicks, punches, and weapons.

Hapkido

Hapkido is a Korean martial art that focuses on flexibility, motion, and balance rather than strength. Hapkido teaches techniques like choking, weapons, throwing, joint manipulation, and pressure point strikes. Hapkido not only teaches self-defense, it also the benefits of being peaceful and a non-violent person.

Aikido

Aikido uses the attacker's strength against them by overpowering them using flexibility and agility. The attacker's own strength is used to cause them to be unbalanced, allowing you to gain the upper hand, no matter what your size. Aikido teaches techniques for attacking and defending such as strikes, grabs, throws and pins.

Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do teaches how to hit vital points of the human body, causing as much damage as possible to your attacker. Blocks, kicks, punches, open hand strikes, take-downs, throws, and joint locks are all taught in Tae Kwon Do. Some styles also incorporate using pressure points and grabbing self-defense techniques.
