Your Oral Balance: How to Moisturize a Dry Mouth

A dry mouth is called xerostomia, and is the condition in which you do not produce enough saliva. Medications you take, certain health problems such as diabetes and hormonal imbalances can cause a dry mouth, according to the American Dental Association. The dryness of your mouth tissues can cause pain, discomfort and eating difficulties. You can restore your oral balance by taking steps to moisturize your dry mouth.

Step 1

Moisturize a dry mouth by introducing more moisture into your home. Run a humidifier, especially at night, to prevent your mouth from feeling even drier than it already is.

Step 2

Sip water or other sugar-free beverages throughout the day, especially when you're eating to facilitate chewing and swallowing. The Oral Cancer Foundation explains that you are more susceptible to decay when you have a dry mouth due to your lack of saliva. Sugary drinks can increase your risk of developing cavities.

Step 3

Add moisture to you dry mouth by chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugar-free hand candy. The October 2002 issue of the "Journal of the American Dental Association" reports that these actions stimulate your salivary glands to produce more saliva.

Step 4

Moisten your mouth with an alcohol-free mouthwash or mouth rinse. Rinses with a strong mint flavor may also stimulate saliva production. Mouthwash is generally fine to use as often as needed; ask your dentist for specific guidelines based on the severity of your xerostomia.

Step 5

Use artificial saliva if other methods to moisturize your dry mouth are not working. Artificial saliva is an over-the-counter lubricant that keeps your mouth and gum tissues moist. Saliva substitutes are available in sprays, swabs and other formats and you can use them frequently without harm.

Tips and Warnings

  • Stay away from alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, as well as tobacco products. The NIDCR explains that these substances can cause more dryness instead of adding moisture to your mouth.
