According to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," coconut oil can be used as a gentle moisturizer and cleanser for all skin types. Though you may feel as though oily skin should not be cleansed with coconut oil for fear of applying excess oil to the skin, even very oily skin can benefit from cleansing with coconut oil. According "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," cleansing oily skin with a moisturizing product, such as coconut oil, reduces the body's need to produce its own pore-clogging sebum.
Step 1
Combine the castor oil and coconut in a jar. According to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual," people with oily skin should combine 3 tbsp. castor oil and 1 tbsp. coconut oil, people with normal skin should combine 2 tbsp. of castor oil and 2 tbsp. of coconut oil and people with dry skin should combine 1 tbsp. castor oil and 3 tbsp. coconut oil. According to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," the castor oil acts as a carrier oil, allowing the coconut oil to better moisturize and cleanse the skin. The greater the ratio of coconut oil, the more potent the solution.
Step 2
Seal the lid on the jar tightly and vigorously shake the jar to mix the castor and coconut oils.
Step 3
Splash warm water on your face. According to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," the warm water will dilate your pores, allowing for any excess dirt or oil to be washed away with the coconut oil.
Step 4
Unscrew the lid of the jar and pour a dime-sized amount into the palm of your hand. Gently massage the coconut oil mixture onto your face.
Step 5
Saturate a washcloth with tepid water and gently wipe away the coconut oil mixture from your face.
Step 6
Splash your face with cool water. According to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," the cool water will constrict your pores, lessening the chance of dirt or oils becoming trapped in your pores.
Step 7
Pat your face dry with a towel. Avoid using a scrubbing motion to dry your face, which according to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," can irritate and damage skin.
