While you can't technically ride your bike with any shoes, or even barefoot, cycling shoes can make the riding more comfortable. Cycling shoes have another advantage. According to REI.com, they have stiffer soles. This allows you to press harder on the pedals, generating more energy and making the riding easier and reducing fatigue in your feet and legs.
Step 1
Think about your main cycling routes. REI.com classifies shoes into three main groups: casual (sport) riding shoes, mountain biking shoes and road cycling shoes. Mountain shoes often have removable toe spikes to give you more stability when dismounting and walking around. Casual shoes are similar to sneakers but sometimes come with a clipless pedal system sole. Road cycling shoes offer very stiff soles and good ventilation.
Step 2
Choose clipless shoes or toe clips if you do BMX tricks or downhill riding. These tips of shoes allow you to get off the bike on short notice without getting hurt. If you choose shoes that come with clips, make sure you have enough time to practice clipping on and off without falling.
Step 3
Try on different types and sizes before committing to buying a pair. According to the Bike Exchange website, the width can vary a lot among different manufacturers, so you need to find one that fits your feet well. Shoes should feel snug but have some room for wiggling, as your feet might swell as they sweat.
Step 4
Take a look at your pedals. If your pedals have a two-, three- or four-hole system, you'll need to buy shoes that fit it, unless you're willing to buy new pedals. The hole system is an alternative to the clips and might be a better choice if you need to jump on and off the bike continuously.
