How to Treat Dry and Peeling Nails

Dry, peelings fingernails can be the result of changing temperatures and moisture levels. For example, if your nails are frequently exposed to water--such as when soaking in a sink of dirty dishes, taking very long showers or baths or swimming, your nails soak up the water. As they dry, the fingernails begin to weaken and peeling can occur, according to the Doctors Book of Home Remedies. In addition to water, dry heat can rob the nails of moisture and cause dryness and peeling. Nutritional deficiencies also can keep the nails from reaching their strongest point.

Step 1

Consume foods that contain biotin, a form of vitamin B. Consumption of biotin is associated with growing thicker, stronger nails, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies. Choose foods such as nuts, lentils and vegetables like cauliflower. You also can take a supplement of 2.5 milligrams daily.

Step 2

Moisturize your fingernails immediately after exposing them to water. You can apply a lotion or even vegetable oil to the nails to keep them soft and prevent peeling.

Step 3

Wear gloves when washing and drying dishes.Cotton-lined rubber gloves can protect you from the water, yet keep the hands and fingernails soft, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Keep them conveniently located near the sink for easy access.

Step 4

Trim your nails regularly. Long nails are more difficult to prevent peeling and dryness. However, short nails can be easier to keep strong, according to The Daily Glow.

Step 5

File the nails each day and after trimming to prevent rough edges or hangnails on the fingernails. Be sure to using a filing stroke that goes in the same direction. A scissoring motion can damage the nail and cause it to split, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Step 6

Rub the tips of the fingernails three to four times per day, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies. This will help to increase circulation, bringing nutrient-rich blood to the fingernails and encouraging growth.
