Choosing the right-sized downhill ski is important for your skiing comfort and safety. You must take several factors into consideration when determining your proper ski length, including your height, weight, ski experience and the type of terrain you are skiing. Though it is difficult to determine the exact ski length that will suit you, it is possible to make an educated estimate so that the ski length you choose does not hinder your skiing experience.

Step 1

Measure your height in inches with measuring tape, convert the number to centimeters by multiplying the inches by 2.54 and subtract 10 cm from the answer, according to SunlightSports.com. The resulting number is a rough estimate of the length ski you should purchase. For example, someone 6 feet tall would use the formula (72 x 2.54) - 10. The answer is 172.88 cm, rounded up to 173 cm.

Step 2

Add 5-10 cm of length to the ski if you are heavier than average for your height. Longer skis provide heavier skiers with increased maneuverability on the slopes.

Step 3

Consider the type of skiing you plan on doing, with regard to speed, the type of slope and type of terrain. Take your skiing experience into account. Trend toward the shorter skis if you are new to skiing or prefer more maneuverability, and longer skis if you're interested in more speed or if you are skiing on powdery snow.

Step 4

Rent skis on the slopes to find the ski length that is right for you, according to JasperSki.com. You can rent several different lengths of skis based on a range developed in Steps 1 through 3. After finding a ski length that is comfortable, you can purchase your new skis with confidence.
