If your hair feels limp and lifeless no matter how you style it, you may need to change how you treat your hair. If you are constantly weighing down your hair with styling products and harsh shampoos, your hair may feel thinner and heavier than it really is. To keep hair thick and full, treat your hair with care to prevent breakage. In some cases, thinning hair may be the cause of a serious medical condition. Consult a doctor if your thinning hair is accompanied by any other symptoms.

Step 1

Condition your hair before you shampoo it, suggests hairstylist Arsen Gurgov in the article "Get Thick, Shiny Hair" in beauty magazine "Harper's Bazaar." Apply conditioner to the ends of your hair, then lather your entire head with shampoo. Wash the shampoo and conditioner out in the shower.

Step 2

Attach hair extensions to your hair to add extra fullness, says stylist and salon owner David Cohen in the article "Great Hair: Make Thinning Hair Thicker" on Washingtonian.com. Purchase clip-on hair extensions that match your natural hair color and attach them underneath your hair, at the roots.

Step 3

Blow dry your hair with a diffuser. Attaching a diffuser to your blow dryer will help dry the hair from every angle, rather than aiming a thin stream of air at the hair. Diffusing the hair adds body to wavy or curly hair.

Step 4

Get a layered haircut, suggests Gurgov. Adding short layers underneath the hair will help increase body and make your locks look fuller. If you have curly hair, instruct your hairstylist to cut your hair with scissors instead of a razor. Cutting curly hair with a razor will create frizziness instead of body.

Step 5

Dye your hair with permenant color. Although dyeing your hair will not permenantly thicken your hair, it may add temporary body by coating the hair shaft.

Tips and Warnings

  • Dry your hair upside-down to add more body to your locks.
  • Dyeing the hair with permanent color may cause hair damage.
