Urinary tract infection, or cystitis, is a common ailment in over 50% of women, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Cystitis is a painful condition caused by bacteria and may need treatment with antibiotics in cases where it does not go away on its own or with the help of home remedies. Natural treatments may relieve a UTI or may suppress symptoms. If the pain or infection persists or recurs after using home remedies, medical advice is necessary.
Cranberry Juice
A time-honored treatment for cystitis, which, not only reduces pain, but also helps prevent infections, cranberry juice, has been elevated to new heights as a result of research reported on by Harvard Health Publications. The research was conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration, who reported, after reviewing ten studies involving the use of cranberries and 1,049 participants, that over a twelve month period, cranberry products reduced the incidence of UTIs by 12 percent. In addition, they reported that for women suffering recurrent cystitis, cranberries reduced the rate of recurrence by 39 percent.
Grapefruit Seed Extract
Grapefruit seed extract is known for its ability to act as an antiviral, anti-fungal and antibacterial agent, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. It is high in antioxidants, as are other citrus fruits, and is useful for treatment of urinary tract infections. UMMC recommends taking a 100 mg capsule or five to ten drops mixed in water or another beverage three times a day for relief.
Homeopathic Cantharis
Cantharis is used often for treatment of cystitis, according to homeopath, Dr. Margaret Tyler in her book, "Homeopathic Drug Pictures". It is helpful for people experiencing extreme pain on urination with blood in the urine. There is much urging to urinate and frequency, with only a few drops of urine being released at a time. The patient needing Cantharis is anxious and may cry out in pain when attempting to urinate. Cantharis is available at health food stores and online homeopathic pharmacies. Consulting with a homeopath before using Cantharis is advised to become familiar with how to use it and in what dose before an actual cystitis attack occurs.
Juniper Berry
In a paper discussing urinary tract infections presented by Ashley Gilpin of New Mexico State University, juniper berry is suggested as one of the herbal treatments for relieving pain and overcoming chronic cystitis. Juniper berry helps to increase urine flow and production of digestive juices that help to lessen pain. The herb has antiseptic and diuretic properties that are helpful in the prevention of recurring attacks of cystitis. Gilpin makes note that juniper berry should be avoided in cases of acute attacks due to its ability to stimulate and irritate the bladder. Because certain herbs may cause side effects or interfere with other medication, seek professional advice before using them.
