Chemotherapy is a combination of potent drugs used to treat several types of cancers. Because of its ability to kill cancer cells quickly, it is employed as the standard treatment method for most malignant growths. However, chemotherapy also causes a number of side effects, including hair loss, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue and weakened immune system. While some symptoms, such as hair loss are unavoidable, others such as nausea and weakness may be alleviated with natural supplements. Vitamins and herbs should be used in conjunction with and not in place of conventional medical care.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice used in Indian dishes which gives curry its golden color. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It has also been studied extensively as an adjunct treatment to chemotherapy. Scientists in Luxembourg, Germany who were researching the herb's potential chemo-preventive effects described its main chemical component, curcumin, as anti-tumoral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.They found that curcumin not only helped to alleviate some of the side effects of chemotherapy, but was also able to slow the growth of cancer cells. It can be found in both capsule and tincture form. However, it is important to consult a health care practitioner before using turmeric for medicinal purposes.

Ginger

Ginger is used by herbalists to treat upset stomach, nausea and diarrhea. It is another common culinary spice which also has medicinal properties. According to the Clayton College of Natural Health herb guide, the herb is naturally anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Although it is mainly used to treat upset stomach and indigestion, it can also be used to treat symptoms of the flu, morning sickness, migraine headaches and stomach ulcers. It helps to cleanse the intestines without disrupting healthy gastrointestinal bacteria. The Mayo Clinic does note that although the results of scientific studies are mixed, many report benefit from using ginger to combat nausea and diarrhea associated with chemotherapy. Ginger can easily be made into warm tea using fresh or dried ginger root.

Alfalfa

The Clayton College herb guide describes alfalfa is a "restorative herb" that may help build the body for those suffering with cancer. It is used by herbalists as a whole body cleanser, and to treat a variety of conditions, including anemia, arthritis, diabetes, fatigue and ulcers. It is especially recommended for those suffering from wasting diseases such as HIV, TB as well as cancer. Because alfalfa is naturally high in iron and helps to build the blood, it may be effective in combating anemia and fatigue associated with chemotherapy. It is also considered safe enough for use by pregnant women.
