Recreation Parks in Polk County, Florida

Polk County is located in central Florida in between Tampa and Orlando. Known for its many lakes along with its mild climate, outdoor activities are on the agenda all year long. There are many parks you can recreate and enjoy hiking, fishing, picnicking and boating. If camping is your thing many of the parks have campsites for RVs and tents.

Hiking

Most of the recreational parks in Polk County have trails for hiking. Lake Kissimmee State park, located in Lake Wales, has 13 miles of hiking trails through pine forests and freshwater marshes. The land is alternately flat and hilly in some of the wet areas in the park, and you will have the opportunity to view wildlife and an occasional Bald eagle.

Cold Creek State Park is located in the city of Lakeland in the Green Swamp Wilderness in Polk County. The park encompasses over 12 miles of of hiking trails. The terrain is mostly flat making it an easy hike for the entire family.

Fishing

Anglers have many places to try their luck whether casting from a boat or from shore. If you choose to cast off on land you will find many piers located in the parks in Polk County. Lake walk-in-water near the city of Frostproof is well stocked with Bluegill, Crappies and large bass. Lake Ariana near Auburndale is a lake where you can catch Largemouth Bass, Bluegills and Crappie. Lake Kissimmee State park and Colt Creek State Park both have fishing piers.

Boating

The well known Chain of lakes is located in Polk Country. Lake Cannon Park features public boat ramps many places along the lake shores along with beaches, picnic grounds and other recreational facilities. There are over 500 lakes in Polk County, most of them being open to the public many suitable for water skiing and other water sports. Lake Shipp Park along with its picnic tables and kids playground is a starting point for the Chain of lakes with launches for boats.

Time To Eat

There are many organic and vegetarian restaurants in Polk County to eat when hunger hits. There are several farmers markets in the country where you can purchase food for snacking and picnicking. Lakeland which is in the heart of Polk County has a farmer's market open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You will find fresh organic fruits and vegetables, freshly made sandwiches, bakery goods plus artwork from local craftsmen. There are farmers markets in nearby Winterhaven, Auburndale and Haines City.

Camping Parks

You can choose from a selection of parks that allow camping in Polk County. Pitch a tent and camp under the stars or bring your RV to many of the parks offering full hookups. Some of the parks offer trailers and cabins for rent. Camp at Lake Rosalie which is just 9 miles east of Lake Wales also is equipped with boat launches and picnic areas. Lake Arbuckle Park, located in the Frostproof city area offers has camping. Check with the park of your choice ahead to see if reservations are necessary or how many spaces are available for camping.
