If your nails are brittle, dry, and breaking off, it may be the result of your environment. Switching on the heater in the wintertime may create a dry environment in your home, causing brittle nails, says "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies." In some cases, brittle, dry nails may be the cause of a more serious condition. If you have any additional symptoms, consult a doctor for further treatment. Otherwise, you can treat your brittle nails at home if your doctor approves.

Step 1

Soak your fingernails in vegetable oil, recommends Herbert Luscombe, M.D., professor emeritus of dermatology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies." The oil will help restore moisture to your dry, brittle nails.

Step 2

Give your fingertips a massage with petroleum jelly to increase blood circulation, add moisture, and help nails grow stronger. Massage your fingertips once a day for several minutes.

Step 3

Apply nail polish to your nails once a week to seal in moisture and keep nails strong, says MayoClinic.com. Keeping nails polished will add an extra layer of protection to your brittle fingernails.

Step 4

Take 2.5mg of biotin once a day to strengthen nails. Biotin, which is a vitamin found in cauliflower, may improve the quality of your brittle nails. You can purchase biotin supplements at the drugstore.

Step 5

Wear gloves when doing the dishes or cleaning, says the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Limiting your exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals and detergents will help protect your nails and keep them from becoming brittle.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you don't have petroleum jelly on hand, use any over-the-counter skin moisturizer.
  • Consult a doctor if your nails have ridges or appear opaque in color.
