In mountaineering, your harness connects you to your rope. It is a necessary link to keep you from falling off the mountain. Choosing a harness may seem overwhelming, but don't be intimidated by the wide variety of harnesses out there. Your harness simply needs to fit well and be comfortable. Everything else is secondary.

Step 1

Go to your local outdoors or climbing shop to look at their selection. Look at all the climbing harnesses and compare features.

Step 2

Select the style of harness you like the most. For mountaineering, an alpine style harness is probably the best. These harnesses have less bulk, making them easier to pack, and are water-resistant to withstand fierce mountain weather.

Step 3

Try on any harnesses that appeal to you. Even if the store doesn't have one in your size, it is important to try on a number of harnesses to get an idea of what feels comfortable to you.

Step 4

Figure out what size harness you need. The waistbelt of a well-fitted harness should be snug when tightened above your hips. The leg loops should also be snug around your thighs.

Step 5

Select your harness based on the size you need and the style you want.
