Most women have facial hair. Some, however, may have noticeable dark, coarse hair because of an excess of the hormone androgen or because of their ethnic or family backgrounds. Removing hair from your upper lip can be done on a daily basis with results lasting only a short time. But more permanent solutions are available.

Step 1

Consider electrolysis. Electrolysis uses an electrical current administered to the hair follicle through a charged needle. Electrolysis damages the individual hair follicles, eventually causing them to die, according to the Mayo Clinic. Several sessions may be needed. This treatment is somewhat painful, and a numbing cream may be used on your lip to prevent discomfort. Side effects include swelling and redness of the upper lip after each session.

Step 2

Schedule an appointment with your dermatologist for laser hair removal. Condensed laser light is used to destroy the hair follicles, inhibiting hair growth gradually. Redness and mild irritation may occur after treatment sessions.

Step 3

Discuss anti-androgen medications with your physician. Anti-androgen drugs stop the overproduction of hormones that cause the growth of excess hair, according to the Mayo Clinic. Blood tests are required to determine if androgen production is the cause of the facial hair.
