Although many mass-produced ginger beers and ginger ales no longer contain real ginger, it is possible to brew your own ginger beer at home with authentic ginger and other natural ingredients. While ginger beer is primarily served as a carbonated beverage, the drink is often used as an ingredient in various types of cooking.
Dark 'n Stormy Cocktail
A dark 'n' stormy cocktail is composed of ginger beer, dark rum, a slice of fresh lime, and ice. In addition, people will often add a candied slice of ginger for extra flavor. While the type of ginger beer you use can range from a homemade batch to something store bought, the dark rum that is found in the cocktail is usually specific to the region in which you live. Traditionally, bartenders pour the rum onto the ice and shake it up before finishing it off with ginger beer. According to Food and Wine, this drink should be served in a collins glass with a splash of lime juice. Ginger beer is also found in other types of drinks, such as Moscow mules, in which vodka is substituted for dark rum.
Ginger Beer Applesauce
Ginger beer applesauce is a new twist on a traditional applesauce recipe. This dish will serve you and five of your guests and is often used as a garnish for meat dishes such as lamb or pork chops. Take six peeled apples and chop them up into small wedges. Place the apples in a crock pot and add 12 oz. of ginger beer to the mix. Add a tablespoon of cinnamon and let the dish heat up for 6 to 8 hours. CD Kitchen recommends keeping the dish covered and at low heat throughout the entire cooking process.
Ginger Beer Marinated Pork Sirloin Chops
This dish combines ginger beer with cubanelle peppers to create a unique pork sirloin marinade. Pour 24 oz. of ginger beer on top of four pork sirloin steaks. Combine this with a clove of garlic and one small ground chili. Chop up two cubanelle peppers and throw those on top of the meat. Let this marinate for an hour or more. From here, place the pork chops on the grill for 5 minutes a side, or until cooked through. Serve with a glass of cold ginger beer. This dish can be prepared either on an open grill or in a pan on an indoor stove.
