Citric acid can be found in fruits such as lemons and is often used to flavor carbonated beverages. It is not a vitamin or a mineral but it does have many benefits for your health. It is known as an alkalinizing agent, meaning it neutralizes excess acid in your blood and urine.

Kidney Problems

Citric acid can treat certain kidney problems such as kidney stones. The acid breaks up existing kidney stones and reduces stone formation by making the urine less favorable for forming new stones.

Skin and Eye Irritation

Citric acid may irritate your skin and eyes. Skin symptoms include pain, itching and redness and eyes may develop a stinging or burning sensation if juice from a lemon squirts into them, for example. If you do experience any discomfort after coming in contact with the acid, flush the area with warm water for up to 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the severity of the exposure.

Urinary Tract Infections

Citric acid has been shown to prevent urinary tract infections.

Digestive Function

Citric acid increases effectiveness of the digestive system by regulating the pH in the digestive tract. It also helps break down fatty foods and increases appetite.
