How to Calculate Your BMI Using the Metric Scale

Your BMI, also known as your body mass index, is a calculation that compares your weight to your height. It's a common method of quickly identifying individuals who may be above or below their recommended weight. This requires you to compare your BMI to a table of standard BMI values. The World Health Organization, or WHO, provides these values in metric units of measure, so you'll need to convert your BMI into metric units.

Step 1

Measure your height with a tape measure that uses inches. Convert your height from inches to meters by multiplying it by 0.0254.

Let your height be 67 in. in this example. Your height is therefore 67 x 0.0254 = 1.7 m.

Step 2

Weigh yourself with a bathroom scale that uses pounds. Convert your weight from pounds to kilograms by dividing by 2.2.

Let your weight be 142 lb. in this example. Your weight is therefore 142 / 2.2 = 64.5 kg.

Step 3

Compute your BMI in metric units. This computation uses the equation BMI = (weight) / (height x height), where weight is in kilograms and height is in meters.

Let your height be 1.7 m and let your weight be 64.5 kg in this example. Your BMI is therefore (64.5) / (1.7 x 1.7) = 22.3.

Step 4

Determine your weight classification from your BMI. The BMI values from the WHO show that the normal BMI range is between 18.5 and 25.

The BMI in our example is is 22.3 and therefore falls within the normal BMI range.
