Reflexology of the hands and feet is a complementary alternative practice that some people use in conjunction with conventional treatments to promote healing, but reflexology is also used alone. The hands and the feet house reflex points that correspond to body parts, and when these reflex points are stimulated, physiological changes occur.

Function

Reflexology of the hands and feet is used to bring balance to the body, and it is used to help correct disorders of the body. It is a natural and non-invasive way to assist the body in healing itself, and it promotes relaxation and relieves anxiety. Hand reflexology may be administered instead of foot reflexology when a foot cannot be worked on, such as in the case of an injury. You can get a session of reflexology of the hands or feet at some spas and wellness centers, and some reflexologists come to your home.

Hand Reflexology

The location of the reflexes in the hands is almost the same as those in the feet, but the reflexes in the hands are not as sensitive. A reflexology map of the hands reveals that most of the reflex points in the hands are situated in the palms. The digits are where the reflexes for the head and sinuses are found.

Foot Reflexology

Most of the reflexes in the feet are on the soles of the feet, and some are on the tops of the feet. Rub the middle section of the bottom of the feet and the section below it to stimulate the stomach reflex and the intestines reflex. Use stroking and rubbing reflexology techniques on the feet to relax the body. When the muscles in the body are tight, blood cannot flow through the body freely and body cells cannot receive the nourishment they require. The elimination of waste matter from the body is also hindered when blood flow is impeded.

Effects

Reflexology has a calming effect on the body. Regular reflexology sessions can improve certain health conditions, and when improvement is achieved, continuing regular sessions can keep the body in a state of health. Reflexology of the hands and feet brings positive results physically, mentally and emotionally.

Warnings

Before having a reflexology session, inform your reflexologist of any health conditions you have. Certain states of health, such as pregnancy, make reflexology a contraindication. Do not be alarmed if you have an adverse reaction after having a reflexology session. Inform your reflexologist about it. Feelings of tiredness, or an upset stomach are two signs your body is healing from the reflexology treatment.
