The majority of women have some cellulite, which is fat that looks like dimpled skin in the hip, thigh and buttocks area, according to the Mayo Clinic. Although cellulite isn't considered a serious condition, it is a cosmetic issue for many women when they want to go outdoors wearing a bathing suit. You can't prevent getting cellulite, and no single miracle cure can get rid of it for good, but you can make some lifestyle changes that will help you maintain a healthier skin tone.

Step 1

Exercise regularly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that healthy adults should get at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise such as walking or at least one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise such as jogging, every week in addition to doing muscle-strengthening activities two days per week. If you're overweight, getting regular exercise and having a healthy diet can help you burn fat, tone muscles and reduce dimpled skin, the Mayo Clinic says.

Step 2

Get a massage. Vigorous kneading and stroking can help increase blood flow, reduce excess fluid and remove toxins in the areas of your body that have cellulite, according to the Mayo Clinic. One form of cellulite massage, called lipomassage, involves a machine that kneads skin between rollers. The Mayo Clinic warns that, despite these treatments' popularity, their results are generally short-lived.

Step 3

Apply a self-tanning product. Cellulite tends to be less visible on darker shades of skin, says the Nemours Foundation. However, traditional tanning methods such as tanning beds and basking in the sun can increase your risk of skin damage.

Step 4

Ask your doctor about medical treatment options. He may recommend laser therapy, which combines diode laser energy with tissue massage to break down fatty tissue, or he may suggest radiofrequency systems, which combine radiofrequency, infrared light and negative tissue massage to reduce the appearance of cellulite, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you opt for one of these treatments, you will typically undergo several treatments on a twice-per-week basis and the results might last as long as six months.

Things You'll Need

  • Self-tanning product
  • Exercise shoes
