For men and women who are prone to razor bumps or razor rash, and those who want a quick shave without a lot of fuss, electric razors are popular option. These razors are meant to provide a dry shave, but the shave isn't usually the close shave that is associated with straight razors. Even though electric razors aren't likely to cause dermatological problems, shaving with one still requires care.
Step 1
Apply a pre-shave lotion made for shaving with an electric razor. These lotions contain alcohol to dry sebum, the naturally occurring oils on your skin and hair. Unlike shaving with a razor blade, electric razors work best when the hair and skin are dry.
Step 2
Turn the electric razor on and press it gently against your skin.
Step 3
Move the razor slowly to shave the hair. If the electric shaver is a rotary shaver that has circular blades, move it in small circular motions. If the electric shaver is a straight shaver that has a row of blades, move in an up-and-down motion.
Step 4
Shave in the direction the hair grows if you are prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps. If you aren't prone to these, shave against the grain of the hair. Shaving against the grain of the hair gives you a closer shave.
Step 5
Rinse your face with lukewarm water after you finish shaving. This will remove pre-shave lotion that remains on your face. If you have sensitive skin, rinse again with cool water.
Step 6
Dry your face by patting it instead of rubbing it. Rubbing your face will irritate the skin, which may lead to ingrown hairs.
Step 7
Soothe the skin by patting a non-alcohol based aftershave onto the skin you shaved. If you have sensitive skin, stay away from products that contain fragrances as fragrances are likely to irritate the skin.
