Your environment and the natural aging process can wreak havoc on your skin. As you get older, your skin becomes less elastic, making it appear less smooth. Dry air, wind and sun exposure also take a toll on your skin, leaving it rough and dry. If you are concerned that you may have a skin condition, an allergic reaction or a medical reason for your rough skin, see your physician. Otherwise, get smooth skin at home.
Step 1
Take a lukewarm shower. "Fitness Magazine" states that hot water strips moisture from your skin, which may leave it rough and dry. Use cooler water to keep the natural oils and fats in place. Avoid drying soaps and use a mild, moisturizing cleanser instead.
Step 2
Exfoliate your skin weekly. Use a washcloth, shower puff or a scrub to remove dead skin cells that make your skin feel rough. However, "Fitness Magazine" warns that exfoliating too often can leave your skin feeling raw and irritated, especially if it tends to be sensitive.
Step 3
Pat dry with a soft towel and apply a moisturizer formulated for your skin type. Use moisturizer on your body to keep your skin smooth and on your face to plump your skin. This will reduce the appearance of wrinkles, says "Redbook Magazine." Use a heavier moisturizer in the winter, when artificial heating and less humid air may contribute to dry, rough skin.
Step 4
Slather on sunscreen all year long, recommends Medline Plus. Sun damage not only puts you at risk for skin cancer, but also can cause roughness, thin skin and wrinkles. Try to stay out of the sun during peak hours, wear a hat outdoors to protect your face from the sun, and avoid tanning salons.
Step 5
Avoid scratching, suggests "Fitness Magazine." If you feel itchy, scratching will further irritate your dry skin. Instead, use a cream or anti-itch cream. If these measures don't work, see your doctor for treatment.
Step 6
Take good care of your body. Eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep to allow your skin to heal itself. Include some heart-healthy fat, such as avocados, olive oil and fatty fish to keep skin supple and elastic.
