The Schwinn Aidyne exercise bike is an upright stationary exercise bike that uses air to provide resistance. Unlike other exercise bikes, which mostly utilize magnetic resistance, the Schwinn Airdyne utilizes a fan placed where the front wheel would normally be. This creates resistance as the fan blades cut through the air around the bike. The Airdyne uses this unique resistance technology along with customized handlebars to create several benefits not found in traditional exercise bikes.

Upper Body Workout

The Schwinn Airdyne has handlebars that allow the rider to incorporate upper body work into his workout. These handlebars work in conjunction with the foot pedals allowing you to focus solely on a lower body workout, upper body workout or a combination of both. Because the handlebars and foot pedals are synced, you can get resistance by pushing or pulling either handlebar. Pushing the handlebar works your chest and shoulders and triceps, similar to a push-up. Pulling the handlebar toward you will work your shoulders and back.

Zero Friction

Because the Airdyne uses air instead of magnets to generate its resistance, there is no wheel and zero friction while in use. The zero friction design provides a smoother workout for those who may be in the process of rehabilitating after an injury. Also, the zero friction design causes less wear and tear on the bike's frame and other parts, which allows Schwinn to offer a 10-year warranty.

Design Benefits

The fan that creates zero friction resistance in the Airdyne also produces a wave of air that cools you while you exercise. The new version of the Airdyne, the Airodyne Evolution Comp, or EVO, comes with a computer monitor that allows you to monitor your speed, distance, calories burned, heart rate and revolutions per minute. This feature will allow you to plan more specific workouts, which was harder to do with the original Airdyne model. Also, the sturdy steel frame of the Airdyne can accommodate riders up to 300 lbs.
