When golfers are not at their best, they typically do not make great contact with the ball. They will lunge at the ball, try to lift it up or even tweak their backswing or downswing. When golfers are in these slumps, the direct result is a poorly hit ball. The golf ball did not get as much height, distance or backspin then if they had hit the ball square. When a golfer hits the ball square or flush, their clubs are making perfect contact with the ball upon impact.

Step 1

Focus on the back of the ball as you begin your swing. According to Golf Link, your stance should be normal with slightly bent knees and a straight back. Look at the back of the ball as you rotate your hips to the right (for a right-handed golfer) during your backswing.

Step 2

Turn your hips toward the left during the downswing. During the downswing, drop your body toward the ball in a move called the "power lean." Drive your weight through your left foot and in the ground. Your hips, body and head should being leaning back toward the ball.

Step 3

Follow through on your swing. At the end of the downswing, bring your hands all the way through and keep the rest of your body calm. Hold your position until the club has come to the waist position on the upswing. Your hands should finish at a high position.

Tips and Warnings

  • Make things more simple while you play. If you are worried about where the ball will end up, chances are the end result won't be pretty. According to Passion For Golf, don't think about hitting the ball. Your main concern during your swing should be to think about striking through the ball. Pretend the ball is just in the way of your swing. There is a better chance to be less distracted if you do this.
  • Do not move your body and head up and down during your swing. According to Matt Campbell Golf, try to keep your head still and your body calm during your swing. It will be very difficult to have a good shot if this is happening. Rotate your shoulders and stay level for best results. If you are moving around before you finish your swing, you will not gain maximum yardage on your shot.
