If you want the smoothest skin possible on your face, shave with a razor blade. The type of razor blade you choose depends on the type of skin you have. If you suffer from ingrown hairs or have sensitive skin, use a single blade razor or a PFB razor. If you aren't prone to razor bumps and you don't suffer from sensitive skin, you can use a multi-blade razor. Regardless of the type of razor you use, make sure that it is a new razor as previously used razors may be dull and have bacteria on the blade.

Step 1

Tease the hairs on your face away from the skin by rubbing it gently in circular motions with a soft toothbrush or washcloth.

Step 2

Soften the hairs on your face by applying a towel that has been dipped in warm water. As the towel cools, dip it in the warm water again. Continue doing this for 5 minutes.

Step 3

Rub shaving gel onto your face. Shaving gel is more lubricating than shaving cream and will provide you with a more even and closer shave.

Step 4

Place the razor against your skin starting at the topmost portion of the hair you are shaving. Use firm but gentle strokes to guide the razor in the direction the hair grows on your face. Shaving against the grain of your hair will produce a closer shave, but it increases your risk of ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Go over each strip of hair with only one stroke.

Step 5

Rinse the razor after each stroke to remove pieces of hair and shaving gel from the blade. Continue shaving your face until the entire beard area is smooth.

Step 6

Splash cool water on your face when you are done shaving. Cool water will soothe the irritation that naturally occurs when shaving.

Step 7

Apply a moisturizing aftershave lotion to your face. Use a patting motion instead of rubbing it on. Be sure that it doesn't contain alcohol as alcohol will irritate the skin and may cause bumps to occur. Additionally, it should be fragrance-free if you have sensitive skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • When shaving areas like your upper lip or neck, you may have to pull your skin slightly to allow the razor to guide smoothly over the area. Don't pull the skin too tight as this increases the chance you will get an ingrown hair.
