If you have noticed your hair becoming thinner or see patches of hair loss, you may be experiencing one of several conditions, such as alopecia, that may benefit from scalp massage. Massaging the scalp with olive oil increases blood circulation, which improves the health of the scalp and stimulates hair growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Step 1
Pour a half-cup of olive oil into a small bowl that is microwave safe. Warm the olive oil in the microwave for approximately 20 seconds. The olive oil should be warm, not hot.
Step 2
Apply the olive oil to your scalp using clean fingertips. Massage the olive oil into your scalp with the pads of your fingers.
Step 3
Start at your forehead and work your way to the crown of your head, slowly. Use small circular motions, applying more warm olive oil to your fingertips when they run dry.
Step 4
Work your way down each side of your head, paying careful attention to the area of scalp behind your ears. Continue massaging in circular motions, moving from the sides of your head, to the back and ending at the nape of your neck.
Step 5
Shampoo your hair after the warm olive oil massage. After shampooing, rinse your hair with cool water to tighten your pores. Repeat the process once a week.
Tips and Warnings
- Between olive oil massages, perform dry massages. Simply rub your scalp in small circular motions using your fingertips, just as you would with the warm olive oil.
- Do not massage your scalp with the warm olive oil more than once a week. Applying olive oil to your scalp too often will cause your hair to become greasy. Do not apply hot olive oil to your scalp. Hot oil can cause severe burns to the skin. Only heat the olive oil until it is warm to the touch.
