The obesity rate in the United States from 2007 to 2008 was 33.8 percent, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. Women were at slightly higher risk than men, with a rate of 35.5 percent compared to 32.2 percent. It's this growing epidemic that's fueled such TV shows as "The Biggest Loser," in which contestants compete for prizes by determining who can lose the greatest percentage of weight over the duration of the show. Calculating the percentage of loss can be tricky, but it serves as a measuring stick of success.

Calculating Percentage of Weight Loss

Step 1

Weigh yourself before you begin your weight-loss effort and write down the number--example: 300 lbs.

Step 2

Weigh yourself again after you are satisfied with the weight loss you have achieved--example: 220 lbs.

Step 3

Subtract your final weight from your starting weight--example: 300 minus 220 equals 80.

Step 4

Divide the difference by your starting weight--example: 80 divided by 300 equals 0.267.

Step 5

Move the decimal two places to the right to find the percentage of weight you have lost. In the example, 0.267 is equivalent to a weight loss of 26.7 percent.
