Dark under-eye circles can make you look much older and more tired than you really are. Dark circles happen when the skin cells under your eyes break down and become thinner, reducing skin elasticity and making your blood vessels are more visible--this gives the circles under your eyes a dark look. You can get dark circles from dehydration, crying, exhaustion and allergies. While some people spend thousands of dollars on surgeries to eliminate these circles, there are more affordable ways to fix the dark circles under you eyes: resting, eating healthy and eliminating bad habits.
Step 1
Stop smoking. Smoking is one of the main reasons for dark circles under your eyes because it sucks the vitamin C from your skin, which brakes down the elastin in your skin.
Step 2
Drink plenty of water. If you don't drink enough water every day, your body doesn't know when it will get water again, so it retains the water currently in your body. If your body is dehydrated, your body retains water under your eyes. MayoClinic.com says that you should drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water per day, avoiding drinks with caffeine and sugar, since they can make the dark circles under your eyes much worse.
Step 3
Put an ice pack over your eyes. The cold feeling from the ice pack will cool and calm your eyes, fixing the dark circles under your eyes. You can either buy an ice pack at the grocery store or put a zip-top bag filled with ice on your eyes for at least 20 minutes. While this method is very effective, it is only temporary.
Step 4
Eat lost of fruits and veggies. Vegetables and fruit are packed with vitamin C, which will help your skin cells produce healthier cells at a faster rate. The healthier cells will replace the damaged skin cells, which will fix the dark circles under your eyes. Eat fruits and veggies like spinach, grapefruit and oranges.
Step 5
Place a tea bag over each eye. Tea bags are full of EGCG, an anti-inflammatory chemical that works to reduce the dark circles under your eyes. Brew two tea bags, drain the water and let cool. Keep the tea bags over the eyes for at least 10 minutes.
Step 6
Sleep at least seven hours per night. The National Sleep Foundation says that you should get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Rest gives your body the opportunity to recover from the abuse you put it through every day. If you can't get seven or eight hours of sleep, try taking a 15-minute nap during the day, with your feet placed at a steeper angle than your heart.
