Detoxification occurs every time you inhale and exhale, moving toxins out of your lungs into the air and bringing oxygen into your lungs to travel through your bloodstream and throughout your body. Exposure to environmental pollution can create a toxic burden on your body. Symptoms might include skin rashes, irregularity, irritability, headaches or a change in appetite. You can consume different herbs to help your body to detox by removing waste from your colon and all your internal organs. Check with your physician or other qualified health professional to determine if an herbal detox is appropriate for you.

Senna, Cascara Sagrada Teas

After getting medical clearance, consider cleansing your colon first. This is a good idea, as not everyone has a daily bowel movement and may experience chronic constipation. There are several commercial detox tea formulas that have several herbs in combination, including fennel seed, psyllium seed, senna pods, cascara sagrada or buckthorn root. Select one suitable for you and notice any changes in your bowel habits. Generally, most detox teas designed for a targeted cleanse are consumed for a short time and not daily.

Ayurvedic Remedy: Triphala

Triphala is another prepared herbal cleanse formula that is composed of three dried fruits. It is safe enough to take daily and is not habit-forming, states Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Guide to Ayurvedic Home Remedies." Ayurveda is a system of health care that originated from India and is used widely worldwide. You can find Ayurvedic remedies such as herbal teas, supplements and honey- or ghee-based oils in most health food stores or online. Triphala will cleanse the colon and can be taken in capsule form during the day or consumed as a tea before sleeping.

Parasite Cleanse: Wormwood, Black Walnut

People who eat meat or fish regularly might consider a parasite cleanse once or twice a year, under medical supervision. Common herbs for a parasite cleanse include black walnut, wormwood, male fern, clove flower and quassia root. Parasite herbal cleanse formulas are available in alcohol- or glycerin-based tinctures taken as a few drops under the tongue, or as capsules.
