The concept of bocce started in Egypt as early as 5200 BC, when Egyptians tossed polished stones and tried to get them as close to a target as possible. Greeks took up the sport around 800 BC and from there it moved to Rome where it got its name. You can play bocce on a beach or a street or in a parking lot or even in your living room. All you need is a large smooth surface. Still, constructing your own court in your yard is the perfect spot for an exciting game of bocce.
Step 1
Lay out an area that's 60 feet to 100 feet long and 10 feet to 13 feet wide. If you want a regulation-size bocce court, you'll need 91 feet by 13 feet.
Step 2
Install sideboards and backboards using treated wood. They must extend 6 inches to 12 inches above the playing surface and be backed by concrete or 4-inch by 4-inch posts spaced a maximum of 4 feet apart.
Step 3
Fill in the area with a minimum of 3 inches of crushed stone and cover with a minimum of 2 inches of clay.
Step 4
Paint the sideboards and backboards with white paint.
Step 5
Paint black lines 2 inches in width to indicate the location of the foul lines and center lines. You can also paint a 1-inch wide line to indicate the initial pallino throw.
Step 6
Smooth the entire surface with a garden rake or broom. The surface must be completely flat and even.
