"Tummy tuck" is the popular name of abdominal wall surgery or abdominoplasty. This is a cosmetic surgery that is usually chosen by individuals with flabby and stretched-out belly muscles and skin. MedlinePlus reports that in a tummy tuck, the fatty tissue and loose skin are removed from the middle and lower sections of the abdomen. The abdominal muscles may also be tightened. This makes the belly firm and flat. Although the surgery does give a firmer and flatter tummy, there are certain complications involved with this surgery, according to Medline Plus.

Damage to Internal Organs

MedlinePlus states that damage to internal organs is a complication of a tummy tuck. The surgery involves cutting an incision across the abdomen and opening the abdominal area. The incision is made just above the individual's pubic area. During the surgical process, the internal organs located in the abdominal region may be damaged accidentally.

Nerve Damage

Loss of skin sensation resulting from nerve damage can occur due to a tummy tuck, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website. During the surgery, damage to a nerve in the area is possible. A nerve can be mistakenly cut, which can cause pain, sensitivity, numbness and tingling in that part of the belly.

Low Temperature

A low temperature is another complication of a tummy tuck, as reported by MedlinePlus. During the surgery, the temperature of the body may become low, which can prove to be dangerous for the individual and can cause him to go into a state of shock.

Bleeding

If a blood vessel is accidentally cut, heavy bleeding can occur after a tummy tuck. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons enumerates on this as being dangerous. This bleeding is also known as a hematoma. The blood loss will lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure, causing the person to go into a state of shock, which can be deadly.

Other Complications

Since the tummy tuck is a surgical procedure, there are certain complications that may occur. These include the risks involved with anesthesia. The individual may develop an allergic reaction to the medications used for anesthesia. Breathing problems and heart attack or stroke can also prove fatal for the individual. Excessive bleeding, infection in the area of the incision, bruising, swelling and scarring may also occur. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that the surgery may cause deep vein thrombosis or blood clots in the legs or the lungs. In addition, the person's skin may become loose again and revisional surgery may be required.
