Clipless bicycle pedals are designed to hold the rider's feet in place on the pedals using a cleat on the bottom of the special cycling shoe. The cleat snaps in place on the pedal, preventing the shoe from slipping off. Popular with touring and mountain bike enthusiasts, clipless pedals offer a higher level of power and control than traditional bike pedals. While cleat designs and configurations may vary, the procedure for installing the cleats on cycling shoes is similar and takes just a little time to accomplish.
Step 1
Ensure the cleats you want to install on your shoes are compatible with the screw holes of the shoe itself. Some shoes use two holes, while others use three or even four.
Step 2
Grease the threads of the cleat screws. Place any washers that come with the cleats into the groove around the screw holes. Ensure the bevels face outward to match the bevels on the screws.
Step 3
Remove the insole of the shoe. Insert the threaded plates for the cleat into the space in the inner sole of the shoe. Ensure they are aligned properly with the holes in the sole. Replace the insole.
Step 4
Align the holes in the cleat with the holes in the insert in the sole of the shoe. Insert a screw into each hole and tighten them with your fingers.
Step 5
Look for the center-of-axle mark, the thin line in the side of the cleat that indicates where the cleat aligns with the axle. Use the mark to determine the position you prefer for the cleat on the shoe and slide the cleat to that position. Ensure the lateral position provides enough clearance between the shoe and the crank arm of the bike.
Step 6
Tighten the screws with the Allen wrench.
