No matter what your skin type, there is a homemade lotion recipe, and a flower, just right for you. Making homemade lotions from flowers such as roses, lavender and violets can cleanse, moisturize, soothe and protect your skin with added benefit of being naturally aromatic. Most homemade lotions use ingredients you already have at home, and flowers you can pick from your garden.

Rosewater

Step 1

Place enough rose petals in a glass Mason jar to fill it 3/4 full.

Step 2

Add the vodka and enough water to fill the jar to full. Stir well.

Step 3

Cover the jar and set it aside to ferment for 1 to 2 weeks.

Step 4

Pour the mixture through a strainer, discard the rose petals and store the rosewater in a covered Mason jar.

Almond Rose Body Lotion

Step 1

Combine the sweet almond oil and beeswax in a glass bowl. Place the bowl in your microwave, then heat and stir at 30 second intervals until the beeswax melts. Remove the bowl from your microwave.

Step 2

Add the rosewater, stirring constantly, and then set the mixture aside until completely cool.

Step 3

Add the vitamin E oil and stir to combine.

Step 4

Place the lotion in a covered glass or plastic container.

Lavender Body Lotion

Step 1

Place a handful of lavender flowers in boiling water and let stand for 1 hour.

Step 2

Pour the mixture through a strainer, discard the lavender flowers and set the lavender water aside in a glass bowl.

Step 3

Heat the olive oil for about 5 to 10 seconds in your microwave until it is just warm.

Step 4

Combine the borax and rosewater, and then stir until the borax dissolves. Add the warm olive oil and stir until the oil bubbles disappear and the mixture emulsifies.

Step 5

Add the lavender water, stir and place the lotion in a covered glass or plastic container.

Violet Lotion

Step 1

Combine the violet leaves, flowers and sweet almond oil in a stainless steel pan. Place the pan on a stove burner set to very low, cover and let steep for 6 hours. Remove the leaves and flowers from the pan and discard.

Step 2

Place the beeswax in a glass bowl and heat in your microwave until it melts, and then add the melted beeswax to the oil.

Step 3

Stir until the mixture becomes creamy and then place the lotion in a covered glass or plastic container. You may need to add a little more oil if the mixture becomes too stiff.

Tips and Warnings

  • Because homemade lotions do not contain preservatives, their shelf-life is shorter than commercial lotions. It is a better idea to mix up a new batch each week than to double a homemade lotion recipe.
