Coconut butter and coconut oil are different forms of the same substance. Coconut oil solidifies at cool temperatures, changing from a clear liquid to a white cream that resembles soft butter. It melts and becomes a liquid when you put it on your skin or warm it. Lotions that you make with coconut butter are thicker than those made with vegetable oils that don't become solid at cool temperatures. Making coconut butter lotion lets you enjoy the emollients, vitamins and minerals in coconut oil, without having greasy skin.
Mix Lotion Recipe
Step 1
Buy coconut oil at a health food retailer or beauty supply store. Read the label to ensure that the product is pure coconut oil, without added ingredients.
Step 2
Purchase the lecithin from a pharmacy. You may need to ask the staff for it, if you don't see it on the shelves. Online drugstores and soap-making product suppliers are often good sources to try, if stores in your area don't stock lecithin.
Step 3
Get distilled water at a grocery store or bring tap water to a boil, then let it cool to make distilled water yourself. Measure ½ cup of water and pour it into the blender.
Step 4
Add ½ cup of coconut oil to the blender. Keep the oil at room temperature so it will be liquid instead of semi-solid, to measure accurately.
Step 5
Measure 1 tbsp. of lecithin and blend all your ingredients together for 10 to 15 seconds on a slow speed such as "whip."
Tailor Lotion
Step 1
Test the consistency of your lotion by dipping your finger in the mixture. Take a dab and rub it on your skin to check the thickness.
Step 2
Adjust the oil and water mixture, one tbsp. at a time, until the blend satisfies you. Add 1 tbsp. of water to the mixture and blend again if your lotion is thicker than you like. If it's too thin, add 1 tbsp. of coconut oil.
Step 3
Pour your lotion into a clean bottle or jar with a lid. Store your lotion at room temperature.
Tips and Warnings
- The lecithin is a mandatory ingredient because it emulsifies the water and oil mixture. Without it, the lotion mixture will separate as soon as you finish blending the ingredients.
