Razor bumps are the result of a condition known as folliculitis, in which the hair follicle becomes infected and inflamed. As you shave, bacteria on your skin or on your razor can enter the hair follicle, causing an infection that resembles small pimples. Folliculitis can cause itching, tenderness or--if the infection is deep--pain and possible scars, reports the Mayo Clinic. Razor bumps can also occur when hair grows back under the skin, or becomes ingrown. Ingrown hairs are common on the bikini area, where hair is coarse and curly. Men with tightly curled hair may also be susceptible to ingrown hairs on their face and neck.

Step 1

Wash your skin before shaving with an antibacterial soap.

Step 2

Shave after your shower or bath, when skin and hair are softer. According to Skinsight, the warm water makes hair easier to cut. Gently exfoliating the area with a washcloth or exfoliating scrub also helps free any ingrown hair tips so they can be removed.

Step 3

Apply a nonirritating shaving gel, which is less likely than a shaving cream to clog pores, according to "Marie Claire" magazine.

Step 4

Use a single-blade razor. Multiblade razors can cut hair too closely, causing it to become trapped under the skin.

Step 5

Rinse off any remaining shaving gel when finished. Wash your skin again with antibacterial soap, and pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

Step 6

Wash your razor, and dry it thoroughly or allow it to air-dry. Replace the cover and store the razor in a clean area. Do not store the razor in the shower, where it is continuously exposed to moisture and bacteria.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consider using an electric razor, which will not cut hairs as closely.
