The colon, also called the large intestine, is the place in the digestive tract where water, minerals and salts are absorbed from food. The remains then get evacuated from the body in the form of feces. When the colon gets backed up, or impacted, you run the risk of not absorbing nutrients properly and you increase your chances of getting colon cancer. The colon colon can be cleansed through various natural techniques.

Diet

One of the biggest reasons for a backed-up colon is because you're eating too little fiber, a nondigestible substance that helps push waste out of the body. It reduces constipation, improves the function of the colon and as a side benefit, it can stabilize blood sugar levels and block the absorption of cholesterol before it can get absorbed in the body.

Increase your daily intake. According to the Mayo Clinic, women should get 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day and men should get 30 to 38 grams a day. Examples of high fiber foods include apples, pears, berries, beans, peas, artichokes and barley.

Water

Water serves many purposes in the body. It helps keep you hydrated, it lubricates the joints and it helps flush toxins from the system. But it can also help aid in digestion and bind to fiber to help push it along in the colon. That's what makes it so important for cleansing. The Institute of Medicine recommends that women consume 2.7 liters of total water a day and men consume 3.7 liters.

Herbs

There are various herbal supplements that can be used to kill parasites, improve the health of the colon and act as laxatives. Although they might be effective, they should be taken as directed, as there is no regulation on their use. Examples of these include psyllium husks, aloe vera, licorice root, marshmallow root, wormwood powder and fennel seed.

Colonic

Colonic irrigation is a process that also goes by the names "high colonic," "colon hydrotherapy" and "colonic therapy." This is similar to an enema but a lot more effective. An instrument called a speculum is inserted into the rectum. Warm water that is enriched with vitamins and electrolytes is then flushed into the colon to break up waste matter that has been dormant. The water pressure is then reversed and the debris gets evacuated from the body.
