After undergoing orthodontic treatment, protecting your investment by wearing a retainer is crucial. Rather than the traditional hard retainers with wires, many orthodontists provide clear retainers that keep teeth in alignment without hiding your newly straightened teeth. As a part of your post-orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist may require you to wear the retainer around the clock or at night. With daily wear, your retainer may pick up germs and odor-causing bacteria and require cleaning.
Step 1
Remove your retainer and rinse it thoroughly with warm water.
Step 2
Prepare a cup with denture cleaner solution, following the manufacturer's directions. Make sure you have enough solution to immerse the retainer.
Step 3
Soak your retainer in the cleaning solution for 15 minutes or according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 4
Brush the retainer gently with a soft toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. Try to avoid scratching the clear, plastic surface.
Step 5
Rinse off the retainer and soak it in alcohol-free mouthwash for at least two hours.
Step 6
Remove the retainer from the mouthwash and rinse it in cool water. Your retainer is clean and ready to wear.
