A homemade eye pillow makes a great gift for any person in your life. Make your eye pillow elegant or whimsical by choosing colors and decorations that suit your taste. This is an easy craft even if you do not have a lot of experience sewing, and you can complete all of the sewing by hand in less than an hour. HomemadeSimple.com recommends using lavender in your eye pillow to induce relaxation and reduce stress.
Step 1
Mix the rice in a small bowl with the dried lavender or a few drops of lavender essential oil. If you are using the oil, allow it to dry.
Step 2
Cut the satin into the desired shape for your pillow. Cut out two rectangle, oval or hourglass shapes that are about 4 inches by 7 inches. If desired, decorate one side of the eye pillow with rickrack, rhinestones, feathers or anything else you'd like. The side with the decorations will be the side that does not rest on your eyes.
Step 3
Pin the satin shapes together, with the right sides facing each other. Hand-sew around all but about 2 inches of your eye pillow using a running stitch. Leave a quarter-inch seam allowance. Tie off the thread and flip the pillow so it is no longer inside out.
Step 4
Pour the rice mixture through a funnel into the eye pillow. Tuck in the ends of the unsewn fabric and stitch the hole closed.
Step 5
Use your eye pillow warmed or chilled. To warm, microwave for up to 20 seconds, recommends "FamilyFun" magazine. Shake the pillow to evenly distribute the heat and check to make sure it is not too hot before placing on your face. To chill, place the eye pillow in the freezer until it is cold.
