Substance Abuse Warning Signs

Substance abuse can take its toll on the organs and the entire body. The liver and kidneys have to work hard to process toxins and filter the blood, which can lead to breakdown and disease. The brain can continually be impaired, which can lead to problems with work, family and personal lives. Several warning signs can be recognized in cases of substance abuse.

Sleep Habits

When someone has a drug addiction, he is prone to having unusual sleep habits. He might be awake all night and lethargic during the day. Or, he can be tired one minute and wired the next.

Performance

Work- or school-related performance is a telltale sign. If there is a sudden loss of interest or a poor performance, it can be a sign of substance abuse.

Moods

Mood swings are natural for most people. But when substance abuse is suspected, these can happen more often and to a higher degree. These can also be accompanied by restlessness, irritability and violent temper tantrums. A bad attitude is also a constant. Substance abuse can cause low self-esteem, forgetfulness and a loss of motivation.

Weight

Eating habits can be altered when there is substance abuse. There can be eating binges at weird times or long periods without eating at all. These situations can lead to excessive weight gain and loss.

Theft

Substance abuse can lead someone to steal money, valuables, cigarettes or alcohol from friends and family members. The valuables are stolen and sold to get money for drugs.

Evidence

Various paraphernalia can be a sign of abuse. Examples include pipes, rolling papers, roach clips, butane lighters, bongs and syringes. You can also find things used to mask odors such as incense, air fresheners and dryer sheets.

Physical Signs

Physical signs that might indicate substance abuse include the smell of a substance on the breath, excessive sweating, tremors, a puffy face, bad coordination and needle marks on the arms.
