Aciphex is the brand name of the generic drug rabeprazole sodium. RXList explains that Aciphex is prescribed for the treatment and management of erosive esophagitis and erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. It is in the class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors and works by decreasing the production of stomach acid. As with all medications, some side effects may occur with Aciphex.
Digestive Difficulties
According to RXList, gastrointestinal side effects are the most common side effects of Aciphex therapy. Patients taking Aciphex have experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Some patients have reported loss of appetite as well. Because Aciphex works by decreasing the amount of stomach acid produced, the drug may have some effects on digestion upon initiation of treatment. Most gastrointestinal side effects subside as the body gets used to Aciphex.
Headaches and Dizziness
Drugs.com reports that Aciphex may cause some neurological effects. Headache is the most reported neurological effect, according to RXList. In most patients, headaches subside with continued use of Aciphex. Other reported neurological symptoms include weakness and dizziness.
Liver Impairment
Drugs.com reports that in rare cases, some patients have experienced liver impairment while taking Aciphex. Symptoms of liver impairment may include yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark colored urine and swelling in the abdomen or rapid weight gain. Patients with signs of liver impairment should have their blood drawn to check liver function.
Fever and Sore Throat
Aciphex may cause other side effects as well. RXList explains that side effects of dry mouth, sore throat and fever may occur with Aciphex therapy.
