The Side Effects of Imipramine

Imipramine--known also as the brand name of Tofranil--belongs to a family of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. This medication helps restore balance to specific chemicals in the brain, thus relieving the symptoms of depression. Some side effects accompany the benefits of this drug, although not every patient experiences these side effects. While most of these usually subside once the body adjusts, should there not be an improvement, or if the symptoms become worse, the prescribing doctor should be notified.

Constipation

Constipation may be a problem for both children and adults who take Imipramine. This is an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, side effect that results in hard, small bowel movements three times or less throughout the week. It can also cause one to feel bloated and sluggish.

To make life easier until this side effect passes, eMedTV suggests patients eat well-balanced meals consisting of high-fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and bran. Consuming plenty of liquids is another option and exercising regularly also helps. Always use the bathroom when the urge to go is felt, and speak to the doctor if this problem persists.

Increase In Weight

Arthur Schoenstadt, MD of eMedTV, explains that during clinical trials, weight gain appeared to be a common problem among patients taking Imipramine. MayoClinic.com concurs, also listing this side effect as a problem. To combat excess gain, patients should try a change in the diet and increase physical activity. If these changes do not help, patients should speak with the doctor, as it enables him to rule out other health problems that may be causing the unexplained weight gain.

Sexual Side Effects

Imipramine can change a person's sex drive, as well as cause erectile dysfunction, better known as impotence.

As far as sexual drive, it may increase it or decrease it. The doctor is unable to determine what kind of impact this medication will have beforehand, or if it will have any impact at all.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition that causes a man to achieve a partial erection or interferes with his ability to achieve any erection at all. The doctor may prescribe a medication to help with this side effect, or, if the impotence is severe, he may prescribe a different antidepressant.
