As a coach, teaching 5-year-old kids how to play basketball is all about teamwork and fundamentals. Basic Basketball Dribbling Drill
This dribbling drill will help improve form and technique. Have four players line up at the baseline with a basketball in hand. On your whistle, have all four players dribble toward center court using only their dominant hand. Once they reach center court, have them pivot on their back foot and dribble back with their opposite hand. If any players struggle with opposite-hand dribbling, have them dribble in place before dribbling toward the baseline. Sharks and Minnows Drill
This drill will improve endurance and passing skills. Break your team down into two separate teams. Have the teams wear different colored uniforms so they can identify who is and isn't on their team. Give one team the basketball, and call them the "minnows." The "sharks" are on defense and should try to tag the minnow with the ball. On your whistle, have the minnows pass the ball around, trying to avoid getting tagged by the sharks. If a player gets tagged holding the ball, he is out of the game. The last minnow with the ball is the winner of the drill.
Speed Lay-Up Drill
This speed drill will help young players develop their layups and inside rebounding abilities. Stand along the baseline with a timer and a ball. Have your team stand at the half-court line to cheer on and encourage their teammates. Direct one player to the foul line, and hand him a ball. On your whistle, have the player dribble to the right side and shoot a lay-up. After each shot, have the player rotate to the opposite side of the basket. The player with the most baskets in 3 minutes is the winner of the drill. If a player is struggling to make his shots, tell him not to worry about rotating between both sides of the basket. Instead, have him focus on making lay-ups with his strong hand only.
